Here’s a simple and delicious recipe for homemade fried donuts. Enjoy making these classic treats!
Ingredients
For the donuts:
- 2 1/4 teaspoons (1 packet) active dry yeast
- 1/2 cup warm water (about 110°F)
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar
- 2 large eggs
- 1/2 cup whole milk, at room temperature
- 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- Vegetable oil, for frying
For the glaze:
- 2 cups powdered sugar
- 1/4 cup whole milk
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Instructions
Make the dough:
- In a small bowl, dissolve the yeast in the warm water. Let it sit for about 5 minutes, until it becomes foamy.
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the sugar, eggs, milk, melted butter, and vanilla extract. Mix well.
- Add the yeast mixture to the wet ingredients and stir to combine.
- Gradually add the flour and salt, mixing until a soft dough forms.
- Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead for about 5 minutes, until the dough is smooth and elastic.
- Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl, cover with a clean kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 to 2 hours, or until it has doubled in size.
Shape and fry the donuts:
- Once the dough has risen, punch it down to release the air.
- Roll the dough out on a lightly floured surface to about 1/2 inch thickness.
- Use a donut cutter or two round cutters (one large and one small) to cut out donut shapes. Reroll the scraps and cut out more donuts as needed.
- Place the cut donuts on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper, cover with a kitchen towel, and let them rise for another 30 to 45 minutes, until puffy.
- In a large pot or deep fryer, heat the vegetable oil to 350°F (175°C).
- Carefully lower a few donuts at a time into the hot oil, frying each side for about 1 to 2 minutes, or until golden brown. Use a slotted spoon to remove the donuts from the oil and place them on a paper towel-lined plate to drain.
Make the glaze:
- In a medium bowl, whisk together the powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla extract until smooth.
- Dip the warm donuts into the glaze, turning to coat completely, then place them on a wire rack to let the glaze set.
Enjoy!
You can also customize your donuts with different toppings like sprinkles, chocolate glaze, or cinnamon sugar. Happy frying!
