- 1 lb (450g) flank steak or sirloin, thinly sliced against the grain
- 2 tablespoons soy sauce
- 1 tablespoon oyster sauce
- 1 tablespoon rice wine (or dry sherry)
- 1 teaspoon cornstarch
- For the Stir-Fry:
- 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
- 1 large onion, sliced
- 2 bell peppers (green, red, or a mix), sliced into strips
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 teaspoon fresh ginger, minced
- 1/2 cup beef broth
- 2 tablespoons soy sauce
- 1 tablespoon oyster sauce
- 1 tablespoon hoisin sauce (optional)
- 1 teaspoon sugar
- 1 teaspoon cornstarch mixed with 2 tablespoons water (slurry)
- 1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper (adjust to taste)
- Salt to taste
- Cooked white rice, for serving
Instructions:
- Marinate the Beef:
- In a bowl, combine the soy sauce, oyster sauce, rice wine, and cornstarch.
- Add the sliced beef and mix well to coat. Let it marinate for at least 15-30 minutes.
- Prepare the Stir-Fry:
- Heat 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil in a large skillet or wok over medium-high heat.
- Add the marinated beef in a single layer and stir-fry until it’s browned but not fully cooked through, about 2-3 minutes. Remove the beef from the skillet and set it aside.
- Cook the Vegetables:
- In the same skillet, add the remaining 1 tablespoon of oil.
- Add the sliced onion and bell peppers. Stir-fry for about 3-4 minutes until they start to soften.
- Add the minced garlic and ginger, and stir-fry for another minute until fragrant.
- Combine and Finish:
- Return the beef to the skillet.
- Add the beef broth, soy sauce, oyster sauce, hoisin sauce (if using), and sugar. Stir well to combine.
- Let the mixture come to a simmer, then add the cornstarch slurry. Stir until the sauce thickens, about 1-2 minutes.
- Season with ground black pepper and salt to taste. Adjust the seasoning as needed.
- Serve:
- Serve the Chinese Pepper Steak hot over cooked white rice.
