Cheesy Herb Scones Recipe
Ingredients:
- 2 cups (250g) all-purpose flour
- 1 tablespoon baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder (optional)
- 1/4 teaspoon onion powder (optional)
- 1/2 cup (115g) unsalted butter, cold and cut into small cubes
- 1 cup (100g) grated cheddar cheese
- 2 tablespoons finely chopped fresh herbs (such as parsley, chives, or thyme)
- 3/4 cup (180ml) milk (plus extra for brushing)
- 1 large egg
Instructions:
- Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- Mix dry ingredients: In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, salt, black pepper, garlic powder, and onion powder.
- Add butter: Add the cold butter cubes to the flour mixture. Using a pastry cutter or your fingers, cut the butter into the flour until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
- Add cheese and herbs: Stir in the grated cheddar cheese and the chopped herbs until evenly distributed.
- Combine wet ingredients: In a small bowl, whisk together the milk and egg.
- Form the dough: Pour the milk mixture into the flour mixture. Stir until just combined, being careful not to overmix.
- Shape the scones: Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and gently knead it a few times to bring it together. Pat the dough into a circle about 1 inch (2.5 cm) thick. Using a floured knife or a pastry cutter, cut the dough into 8 wedges.
- Prepare for baking: Place the wedges on the prepared baking sheet. Brush the tops with a little extra milk to help them brown.
- Bake: Bake for 15-20 minutes, or until the scones are golden brown and a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
- Cool and serve: Allow the scones to cool on a wire rack for a few minutes before serving warm.
